Thinking Like Murdoch
-A Research / Design / Build Project for Senior Technological Design
-Presentation at the PEO Education Conference June 10, 2017
-Millwright John Murdoch: a mid-18th century
innovator
-His Wooden Horse on Wheels, is believed to be the western world’s earliest human-powered vehicle
-If the ordinary lower middle class eighteenth century Scots could take a leading role in the age of improvement…so can our youth in this twenty-first century era of radical change.
-Murdoch's design brief / goal: To modify a familiar shop helper tool – a saw horse … to convert it into a moving shop helper tool… a helper tool that would enable a tradesman to travel to a workplace, with his tools, more quickly and conveniently.
-What did Murdoch already know?
-Murdoch's train of thought -- levers, wheels, friction
-Requirements: Analysis and Synthesis of a solution framework
-Sub-systems: Structural Frame; Steering; Driving; Wheels; Tool storage
-Construction; Lessons Learned
-Testing: the hardwood model
-Anonymous student survey of this learning opportunity -- 8.7 / 10 --
Judged by 21 students to have been an excellent learning opportunity

Hello
Bruce,
I
wanted to thank you and the bright students from SATEC for their great
presentation at the Education Conference this year. All four students, Melanie
Tham, Hassan Karim, Isha Cheema and Mymoon Bhyuiyan demonstrated great
interest in the hands-on activity and engineering skills by participating in
this interesting project at SATEC. I wish them all the best with their secondary
school studies and look forward to seeing them as future engineers serving our
diverse community.
Best
Regards,
Paymon
